I was preparing my wardrobe for a documentary series that ended up not being made, and I came up with what turned out to be a pretty demanding set of criteria: I wanted a suit that I could wear pretty much anywhere on Earth, be it in the middle of the tropics or the middle of Manhattan. A suit that could tramp through the jungle all day, be washed in a bucket, hung out to dry and worn to the embassy in the morning. A suit that could be worn tucked into high-leg boots, with a tie, with a cravat, with a bush hat or dress fedora and look right with them all. A suit that could travel the world and only need to be changed when an event called for black tie. A suit that would take whatever punishment I could come up with, and not even notice.
